Anastrozole sold under the trade name Arimidex is a non-steroidal aromatase inhibiting drug (AI), it is an FDA approved drug typically used to treat breast cancer along with other medications. However in the bodybuilding world, arimidex is used to inhibit the synthesis of estrogen. Male bodybuilders using anabolic steroids, some of them convert by the aromatase enzyme into the female hormone estradiol (aromatisation). The most aromatising steroids are testosterone esters and methandienone. If estradiol is not suppressed by taking aromatase inhibitors (AI), unpleasant side effects may occur. The most common of them is gynecomastia, i.e. the build-up of female breast tissue in men under impact of female hormone estradiol. Estradiol also causes water retention and increase in the amount of subcutaneous fat. As a result, you can get a rise in blood pressure, heart strain and depression. High levels of estradiol may adversely affect libido.
On the other hand, taking too much arimidex or other aromatase inhibitors can suppress estradiol too much which will result in negative side effects such as erectile dysfunction, loss of energy, depression and muscle-loss.
The main advantage of arimidex as compared to antiestrogens (SERMs) such as tamoxifen or clomiphene consist in the fact that arimidex blocks production of the aromatase enzyme, hence, prevents estradiol generation at the earliest stages, while antiestrogens only prevent contact of estradiol with the corresponding receptors by binding to them instead of estradiol, but don’t reduce its production in the body .Therefore, estradiol may still circulate in bloodstream in large amounts when you take antiestrogens.
Potential Side Effects:
Arimidex itself carries with it several possible side effects. Many of the side effects of Arimidex will be response related. Response side effects are typical with all medications; some of us can take certain over the counter head ache medication while others can’t. The side effects of Arimidex will also vary depending on anabolic steroid use in a few specific areas. Those who are using Arimidex without anabolic steroids often report weakness and fatigue; in fact, this may be the most common side effect of Arimidex. Most anabolic steroid users will not have this issue with low dose Arimidex use. However, we can make an exception when it is used in hard cutting or competition cycles when calories are very low and training often extremely intense. Other possible side effects of Arimidex use include:
- Hot Flashes
- High Blood Pressure
- Joint Pain
- Depression (rare)
- Nausea and or Vomiting (rare)
RECOMMENDED DOSAGE: .25mg to 1mg per day/every other day.
